Scottish Borders Council Community Fund is now open!

The fund provides support to voluntary and community groups which are active within the Borders, and assistance to communities or interest groups with the development of community-based projects.

The scheme is divided up between each of the five area partnerships, Berwickshire, Cheviot, Eildon, Teviot and Liddesdale and Tweeddale, with an amount set aside for Borders-wide projects.

Due to COVID-19 our Financial Inclusion Team have seen an increase in the number or our customers requiring help.

In the months from April to June, 38 of our 110 referrals were as a direct result of COVID-19. Many of these were from people who had no experience of the benefits system and were understandably very worried, as they saw their incomes take a dramatic turn.

Our team had to adapt and learn very quickly, benefit rules changed on a daily basis as the Government introduced various schemes to help workers. Technology proved vital during these times, assisting with claims and signposting to support services. Some of the biggest concerns were around making claims for disability benefits, not being able to visit those who have lost someone close to them and assisting families with the increase of utility usage during lockdown.

One key success for our team was working with One Parent Families Scotland - Emergency Energy Fund, which secured financial assistance for 21 one parent families to apply for grants of £50 towards their energy costs.

The team also made 53 applications to the Duns and Eyemouth Food Banks for tenants in need, an increase of 32 for the same period last year.

There will be a number of golden pumpkins placed in Windows around the village for the children to count. They will be displayed between 25th October to 1st November. All you have to do is count them, once you think you have them all send your guess with your child's name on to our page.
