Collect all the information you can about your debts, such as contracts, bills and statements. These may include:▪️ rent arrears▪️ credit card debts▪️ council tax arrears, including unpaid water & sewerage charges ▪️ energy bills ▪️ money you’ve borrowed from family and friendsMake a list and write down the details of each debt▪️ who you owe the money to – this is your ‘creditor’▪️when you first missed the payment▪️how much you owe – this might be in a recent statement ▪️your account reference number – this might be at the top of your statement▪️what the creditor has done to get the money back – for example, sending you letters or taking you to court. It may be stressful to see all your debts written down on a list but it is the first step for you to sorting out which debt is a priority and how you will go about sorting them out. 🔸Step Up, Step Out of Debts 🔸Identifying your Priority DebtsThese debts can cause you particularly serious problems if you don’t do anything about them, so you need to deal with them first. If you’ve got any of these, they’re your priority debts. 🔸Rent Arrears 🔸This is a priority debt because you and your family may be evicted if you don’t pay. If you have an issue with your rent, it will be best to get in touch with us as soon as possible, so that we can work out a payment plan. You can call us at 0800 652 8104.An eviction procedure is the last stage when all things fail. When this happens, a court possession order will be issued which states when you have to leave. 🔸Council Tax Arrears🔸This is a priority debt because if you don’t pay, your local council will usually ask the Sheriff Court to send you a demand for payment. This is called a ‘summary warrant’. Once the council has got that, it will send you a demand to pay. This is called a ‘charge for payment’. If you don’t pay within the time limit, the council can take steps to get the money from you. 🔸Gas or electricity bills🔸If the debt is with your current supplier, it’s a priority because they may cut off your gas or electricity if you don’t pay. If you’ve got a prepayment meter and you don’t top it up, your energy supply might stop. It’s best to arrange to pay what you owe them to avoid supply cuts. 🔸Court Fines 🔸These are priority debts because strong action can be taken against you if you don’t pay. For fines over £500, in rare circumstances, you could be sent to prison if you don’t pay. You might get a court fine if you commit a crime, for example:▪️speeding or breaking other rules while driving▪️watching TV without a TV licence🔸Unpaid Child Maintenance🔸This is a priority debt because the Child Maintenance Service can take the money from your wages or bank accounts if you don’t pay. They will warn you if they’re going to do this but they don’t have to go to court first.
