Updating your Universal Credit Journal for April's rent increase

Published on 1st April 2026

If you’re on Universal Credit, you get help with your housing costs. You’ll need to update your journal with your new rent amount, or you could lose out on the difference!

As a BHA customer, your new rent amount is included on the rent increase notification letter that you’ll receive from us in March. Keep this letter safe as you’ll need it in April.

If you don’t report any changes to Universal Credit correctly when your rent increases from the beginning of April, it could lead to delays in payments and your housing rent will be underpaid, leading to rent arrears.

Universal Credit will send you a ‘to-do’ on, or after,  Wednesday 1 April called ‘confirm your housing cost’. Please do not complete this until Monday 6 April

This will appear as a ‘To-do’ task as:

➡️”Confirm your housing costs”
Please follow the steps in the infographic (right)  to complete this or see here for a detailed guide with screenshots.

⚠️Remember: Only do this on 6th April when your rent increase takes effect and make sure that you get this done before the end of April 2026 (end of assessment period)

👁️‍🗨️Note: BHA cannot make this change for you. If you need further guidance from us, please contact us at 0800 652 8104.
