Fire Safety at Home : Simple Steps to Stay Safe
Keeping you and your family safe is our top priority. Fires can start quickly and without warning, but the good news is there are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk and stay safe in your home.
Reduce the chances of a fire
- Watch your cooking – most house fires start in the kitchen. Never leave pans unattended, especially when frying
- Use candles carefully – use sturdy holders and keep candles away from curtains and other flammable items. Always blow them out when you leave the room or go to bed
- Don’t overload sockets – too many plugs in one socket can overheat and cause a fire. Use extension leads safely and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- Unplug before bed – switch off chargers and appliances before you go to sleep
- Store matches and lighters safely – keep them in a secure place, out of sight and reach of children
- Close doors at night – it might seem small, but it slows the spread of fire and smoke while you sleep
- Use BBQ’s safely – keep them outside, away from anything that can catch fire, and never leave them unattended
Ensure your smoke and heat detectors are maintained
- Test smoke alarms weekly – pick a day that works best for you, like ‘Test It Tuesday’ – press and hold the test button to make sure they’re working
- Never remove or tamper with them – even temporarily. They’re there to protect you
- Keep them clean – gently dust or hoover them now and then, to prevent false alarms or blockages
- Report any issues – if your alarms aren’t working or something doesn’t seem right, give us a call straight away on 0800 652 8104
Did you know you’re four times more likely to die in a fire if you don’t have working smoke alarms? It’s a serious fact, but it shows just how important smoke alarms are in protecting you and your loved ones.
Have an escape plan
- Know your exits – make sure everyone knows the quickest and safest way out of each room
- Check windows and doors – make sure they open easily and keep keys where you can reach them quickly if needed
- Practice your plan – especially with children, so everyone stays calm and knows what to do
- Pick a meeting spot – choose a safe place outside where you’ll all meet
- Never go back inside – once you’re out, stay out. Things can be replaced, people can’tA fire can spread in seconds. That’s why having an escape plan can be a lifesaver. Everyone in your household should know exactly what to do in an emergency.
