Renewable Energy
Berwickshire Housing Association now deploys a range of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in all new properties, dependant on site location and orientation.
- Sun Spaces, with integral ventilation systems, to assist with space heating;
- solar water heating panels;
- wind turbines – 3 pilot installations are monitored and all new houses are strengthened to take wind turbines, pending the technology becoming fully developed and affordable;
- photo-voltaic cells – we monitor 17 pilot installations.
In 2005 Berwickshire Housing Association and our subsidiary "berwickshirelimited" participated in a consortium to deploy a European-designed fuel cell as part of Berwickshire Housing Association’s Gunsgreen Hill development, the first such in Europe. This development was opened by Malcolm Chisholm, the Scottish Minister for Communities, and attracted a lot of media and scientific interest. The fuel cell, which generates heat and power for a family house, will be monitored for a year by its manufacturing company and it is anticipated that further fuel cell deployments will follow.
We are also in planning dialogues for the pilot roll-out of a 5MW community-based wind park. Communities Scotland has confirmed they will support the feasibility study.
