Our Performance in 2006
2006 has been a memorable year for Berwickshire Housing Association. Highlights have included:
- The 10th anniversary of the transfer of the 2,050 properties owned by the former Berwickshire District Council to the Association. This was the first ever 100% transfer of council housing in Scotland.
- Celebration of this 10th birthday in several ways, finishing with a very successful Open Day at Berwickshire Housing Association’s Head Office in Duns. It attracted about 250 visitors, raised money for Duns Primary School, and five lucky tenants won prizes – kindly donated by our contractors - in a prize draw.
- The opening of our 18-house development at Gunsgreenhill, Eyemouth by Malcolm Chisholm, Minister for Communities. At our ‘Level 4’ house he switched on a hydrogen fuel cell, the first of its type in Europe to provide heat and power for a residential property.
- Our two new houses at Wellfield, Swinton, designed by architect Oliver Chapman, won a Scottish Design Award.
2006 was also a financial turning point, with income streams developing from the subsidiaries and the Association growing too. Since we decided to form the BHA Group 4 years ago our turnover has gone up by 70% and our balance sheet has improved 150% - And we have moved into surplus 7 years ahead of our original business plan.
